Letter from the Local Organizing Chair

Dear Colleagues

I am honored to organize the 50th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Pacific Association of Pediatric Surgeons here in Seattle, Washington. Seattle is a culturally diverse city with easy access as a major international hub by both air and sea. The technological advances in Seattle with Boeing, Microsoft, Amazon, and many other huge ground breaking companies has created a world destination for people to come work and live. Adding to that diversity, is a natural scenic wonderland of rivers and lakes and mountains and trails. There is so much to do here with so many possibilities both indoors and out. And I want you to enjoy it all. We have created a fun and exciting social program to complement an outstanding academic and learning experience.

We kick off with a cocktail reception on the rooftop of the Bell Harbour Conference Center right across the street from our host hotel, the Seattle Waterfront Marriott. The sights from the top of this beautiful landmark are incredible as you get a great view of Elliott Bay, Puget Sound, and the Seattle Skyline. We then give you a sample of the technology by touring the Boeing Factory in Everett Washington to see the assembly of the 747, 777 and the first ever carbon fiber passenger plane, the 787 Dreamliner which are all manufactured in the largest building in the world on the Boeing Campus. This technology experience will be complemented by a trip to the artistic Chihuly Garden and Glass Museum, which rises in the shadow of Seattle's most famous landmark, the Seattle Space Needle, our third destination on our all inclusive conference tour.

The Conference Dinner will be at another iconic museum in Seattle, Boeing's Museum of Flight. You will have dinner underneath the SR-71 Blackbird, the fastest airplane ever made which traveled at speeds over mach 3. There are over 170 exhibits of planes and other artifacts at this museum including JFK's Air Force One, the Concorde, and a Space Shuttle trainer. We have flight simulators we can use so why not try your skills at flying the Blue Angels F/A-18 Hornet!

Finally, I am pleased to bring you the most exciting part of the 50th annual PAPS meeting, the PAPS Return to Rosario Excursion. The first PAPS meeting was held at Rosario Resort on Orcas Islands, the most mountainous of the beautiful San Juan Islands about 90 nautical miles north of Seattle. We will return to Rosario aboard the high speed catamaran, the Victoria Clipper III. This vessel will leave from pier 69, right across the street from your hotel and travel to Rosario at speeds of over 30 knots. Along the way, we will see the incredible sights of Puget Sound including sea otter, bald eagles, and the treacherously narrow Deception Pass. But before we dock at Rosario for our dinner and Champagne Toast, we will head out into International Waters between the US and Canada and catch the Orca Killer Whales with a whale watching trip. This part of the journey is actually after the PAPS meeting has concluded on June 1st and is in addition to your conference fee. The Victoria Clipper III only has a capacity for 200 people so reservations are required which you can make on this website. reservations for the Rosario Excursion will be on a first come, first served basis so please make your reservations early.

There you have it! The plans for the 50th Meeting of the Pacific Association of Pediatric Surgeons are set and Seattle is ready to welcome the World. See you in May!
